Here is why you should avoid people who annoy you! Scientist have discovered that being in the company of annoying people slows the rate at which the mind processes movement. Whether you like someone or not can affect how your brain processes their actions, according to new research from the University of Sbuthern California.
Most of the time, watching someone else move causes a ‘mirroring’ effect- that is, the parts of our brains responsible for movement are activated by watching someone else in action, Daily Mail reported. However, being around someone you don’t like can send this process awry – you might think the person is moving more slowly than they actually are. Previous research has shown that race or physical similarity can influence brain processes, and we tend to have more empathy for people who look more like us.
Children addicted to the internet could soon be classed as mentally ill, it has been claimed. According to the Herald Sun,'internet-use disorder' will be included in the DSM-IV- The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders- from May next year, the Daily Mail reported. The Diagnosis will include those who are addicted to their smartphones as well as using tablet computers or desktop machines. Mike Kyrios from Swinburne University of Technology, who helped author the APS submission, told the publication that, once more research is invested in the disorder, it will allow health professionals to diagnose children with addictive behaviors from technology overuse, leading to the correct treatment.
People who enjoy life the most, are three times more likely to live a little longer than those who do so the least, a study has claimed. University College London researchers' study of 10,000 English people also suggested that future disability and poor health could be predicted by the state of a person's mind, the BBC reported. The Team said the effects were "large" and independent of age, sex and wealth. Happiness could be used to spot people at risk of ill health, they added. Researchers tracked the psychological well-being of 10,000 people aged 50 to 100 over nine years as part of the University's English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.
Scientists are ultimately searching for new ways to treat diet-related disorders while raising awareness that diet and obesity affect mental as well as physical health. Being obese appears to affect cognitive function, requiring more effort to complete a complex decisions-making task, according to researcher Timothy Verstynen. Brain images suggest that when people skip breakfast, the pleasure seeking part of the brain is activated by picture of high-calorie food. Skipping breakfast also appears to increase food consumption at lunch, possibly casting doubt on the the use of fasting as an approach to diet control, revealed the study that was carried out by Tony Gold-stone, MD, PHD.
